Soooo, the night started out with us planning to not go out. Mr Kwon wanted to take us out to dinner, and we were exhausted and didn't want to go. So Vince had called him to tell him we couldn't make it. We were just going to go downstairs for a drink. We get down there, and Mr Kwon is waiting for us in the lobby....didn't get our message! Oh well....we have a beer with him to be kind and part ways.
We went back to the room, and decided we HAVE to go out! So, I secretly find a place I want to try, and tell Vince it is just down the street & we can walk. One of the things that intrigued me about this place is that a review said "if you can find it, you are lucky and will LOVE it". One of my fav challenges in life haha!! Let me find a hidden gem.
So we set off walking. Even with my feet on fire and falling apart by the minute, I wasn't the one complaining about the walk ;) So, we walk for about 30 mins and finally find the street that it is supposed to be on. Still haven't told Vince where we are going...just to trust me. So we get to the area, and don't see it. We ask a local and he tells us to walk down these stairs and its down there. So we go...dark narrow staircase that looks like it leads to nowhere. Then it finally dumps us out in a dark alley full of carports and nothing that looks like its inhabitable. We see a door, hear people & noises coming from it...but we can't get in. I'm on a mission. So we wander around and find a sliding dark wood door...taaaa-daaaa!!! That is it! We found it.
Inside is a tiny, crazy cool bar. We are greeted with a "Hey whats up?!" from a Korean but sounds totally American. We are seated....and this guy comes over and just starts chatting. We order some beers and hang out. Vince chats him up again and turns out that he grew up in Laguna Beach...moved to Korea Town in LA to run a restaurant for someone. These 2 guys approached him there about a year ago & invited him to come to Korea to co-own and run this pub here. Being young and ambitious, he jumped on it. So, he & his girlfriend moved there and started this new life. We ended up totally hitting it off with him & hanging out all night. We ordered some unbelievably amazing food...and things just kept on coming. Food, snacks, beers from around the world....everything. The owner even told us that he hired models to work as waiters & waitresses. The men were like 7 foot tall Calvin Klein models....who cares if they knew how to wait tables. They were pretty. And it was obviously working.
Eventually 2 other guys came in...both of them from Korea but one spent years in LA and became friends with the owner there. They joined us at our table because the place was packed & the owner said "hey do you guys mind sharing - you all would get along!" and we hung out with them all night too. The owner came and sat with us and the 5 of us just chatted and talked ALL night! I think we finally left at about 3am. It was amazing. And so much fun...and truly unforgettable!!! Best night I've had in a long, long time! This night reminded how much fun I have when we are left to just exploring and meeting new people in strange places...the good ole days!
Hopsctoch Bar....you had me at "good luck if you find me". Members Only for sure. Made my trip to Korea one of the best ever. You rock and I would go back just for you!!! Until next time.......
