07.12.2013: All Abbbboooard!!!

Our morning started off pretty traditional...Christina & I hit the local grocery store to get all the food items needed....then the McDonalds on our way out.  The rest of the crew hit the gas station then headed to the lake for the launching of the boat & SeaDoos....and prepping the Houseboat.  As we were unloading the groceries, it started raining...again.  It was just a sprinkle, so no big deal...but was very reminiscent of last year when it POURED on us as we were loading the boat!  Oh well...we are headed to the lake to spend the next few in days in the water...and wet!

We were worried about the wind, as they predicted a storm coming in.  We wanted to get clear of the marina before that happened or they would hold us until the storm passes and wouldn't let us launch...which could put a real damper on our whole trip!  They were predicting a BIG one!  So, it was good that we got loaded up and they let us get out & on our way.

It was a GORGEOUS launch and trip out through the narrows...

Chillin with our traditional Bloody Mary's up top....what a way to start a vacation!

Doesn't get much better than these views...

Not sure if you can see that dark profile in the white water line....it looks like an indian to us.  So crazy...definite profile of something!

And the fun has come to an abrupt end.  As we came out of the narrows, we could see a storm coming up over the mountains near Temple Bar...which is where we were headed.  We were hoping to get in front of it....but we ran smack dab into the middle of it.  We went from clear skies & light breezes to gale force winds and pouring rain!  I was feeling very "Perfect Storm"-ish.  Luckily Scott is an amazing driver/captain and kept us steady & upright.  There were other houseboats that looked like they might be in danger & were just going in circles.  We were just trying to survive.  We could barely see 20 feet in front of us and came up on a boat a few times.  Stuff was flying off the bow of the boat, we were almost tipping over, the kids we had on board were crying, the parents were panicked....and Scott was in total control :)  Oh ya, did I mention that I was taking pictures?!  These, by the way, do not capture nearly a tenth of what it really looked like.  We could not even stand up inside it was so rocky.  The waves were so big that there were not even white caps.  Crazy.  Out of all the years on Lake Mead, I think this was a first for us...esp on a houseboat!  Luckily there were only a few of us on the houseboat...I think if the other kids were on there, they might have been traumatized for life.

Needless to say, Scott navigated us right through it all and got us safely to our destination.  Luckily the boat and SeaDoos (and their occupants) were safely secured on shore and in no danger.  When we pulled up with white faces, they were wondering what the big deal was!  And no, the white faces were not because we hadn't gotten our Lake Mead tan on yet!    Anyways, we pulled up on shore and the fellas secured us down with some ropes and stakes.  This is a very critical part of the trip...as it dictates the rest of the weekend's "boat security".  Thankfully, we have lots and lots of experience in this!!
