So on our bus ride back from Tulum, we asked the bus driver if we could be dropped off at Playa del Carmen. He said it was right off the freeway, and that we could walk to the cute touristy shopping areas we had been hearing about. So, about halfway back from Tulum, the bus driver pulls off on the side of the "freeway"and lets us out on the road. He basically says "just walk down that way". With no signs, and truly feeling like we are in the middle of some regular Cancun strip mall area, we start heading down the street. After a couple blocks we realize that we are FAR from the Playa del Carmen we are thinking of!! We were looking for 5th Ave, which is the big tourist shopping area. Our first street sign said 30th Ave. Ummm...
So, after walking a few blocks thru the less than fancy part of town, we got to our destination. Actually though, we passed by a TON of little hole in the wall eating places that probably would have been amazing. Obviously no tourists in this area of town, which means that is where the REAL food is. However, we succumbed to the heading to the tourist area anyways!
Once we got to Playa Del Carmen, it was basically heaven for Mom! Shops EVERYWHERE! All kinds of amazing places to buy fun Cancun stuff. And shop she did! (We all did!)
We stopped for some drinks and lunch. Oh, and you can drink in the streets here...just like Vegas! There were booths where you could buy drinks & walk with them. Pretty cool. Had a few of those too.
After the day ended, we hailed a cab for the ride back to Azul Beach. There was some "discussion" on our way to the cab, as they wanted to charge us $100 for the cab ride!!! In the bus, the bus driver said it should only be about $40 for us to get a cab back. Hmmm...all a big scam! Oh well, we got back to the resort safely, and for only about $80. Our quite shy guy did some "negotiating" for us! Because everything is negotiable!! :) What a day of adventure & fun!!!
Man, I really wanted to buy this cute hat! Haha!
5th Ave...
Found this shop that had these AWESOME hand painted one-of-a-kind Chuck Taylors. They were soooo cool! Vince went in to check the prices & the cheapest were about $5,000. Too bad...
Catholic Church in downtown
We went to a late lunch at a cute place right on 5th Ave. The food was traditional local fare, lots of fresh fish! Today is actually Vince's official birthday, so Mom had the mariachi band come sing to him! :) He san right along with them! That's my quite, shy husband!
The birthday lunch bunch!
