12.01.2013: Exploring Adventures in Tulum

Most of the group were leaving today, but we had planned to stay until Monday, so we could have an extra day to rest & relax.  We said our goodbyes to most people in the morning before we left.  We were off to explore the magical Mayan ruins of Tulum.  We knew we wanted to do some sort of exploration, and these were by far the highest rated and the #1 on the "must-see" list....so we did it!  Mom, Dad, Drake, Vince and I boarded a bus and headed north.  The Mayan ruins are about an hour from our resort in Riviera Maya.  It wasn't a bad ride, and gave us a great opportunity to see some of the other resorts along the way...and see some of the local culture of the area as well.

Once we got to the ruin area, you get off the bus and head thru some shop areas where they try to get you to buy all the souvenirs before you even get to the ruins :)

The walk up to the ruins is amazing.  There are little underground rivers all along the way, and iguanas everywhere!  I wish I could remember all the stories about all the different buildings and sites...it was so interesting!  A definite bucket list item for anyone even considering it.

This rock formation is shaped in the head of an iguana.  The Mayans believed that the iguanas are the protectors of the ports.  This iguana protected this beach, which used to be the main shipping port for this area.  The beach is now closed both to preserve it, and also because it is a sea turtle sanctuary. At certain times of the year, the turtles come up under the trees and lay their eggs.

It started POURING on us.  It was amazing.  I loved it...but was just worried about my camera getting soaked! :(  Otherwise, was ready for the rain!
 Drenched!

Well, since we were already wet....
These were magical waters.  The color was amazing, it was warm and it felt sooo different from any ocean water I have been in.  The water was soft. It was still super salty, but it was soft.

 Hello sun!

 Exiting the ruins....
