Soooo, here's what I've learned so far:
- German engineering is no joke. They are engineer geniuses here. You see it everywhere. From how showers or toilets are built to city infrastructure, houses, cars, etc. I cant get over it and am constantly amazed by even just the little things.
- There are Riedman looking people everywhere. I actually swore I saw Uncle Jim & Father John here yesterday.
- I see the Papa way of life everywhere here too. Everything is used, recycled....very little waste or trash. OCD with how things are done. Even Vince is amazed and points it out now.
- Everywhere is super clean...big & little cities. People really take pride in the outdoors. Absolutely no trash anywhere....but there is graffiti in the bigger cities which sucks!!
- Driving is FANTASTIC!!! Going 130mph on the autobahn is nothing. People flying past me in their little cars - everyone drives fast. And they are much more courteous and aware than American drivers it seems. Its like a dance people weaving in &out of each other seamlessly. It's amazing and fun!!
- No one drinks water. Esp with a meal. It's considered insulting to ruin a good meal with such a bland drink. If you go out to eat, you better order non water! Altho I don't feel dehydrated. No idea how people stay hydrated here. Maybe moisture seeps in thru the skin.
- The food is actually really good...and it's not just all meat & potatoes :) But there is a lot of that! Germans don't import much food. They are super strict on non-GMO or toxic foods, so they choose to just not import it so they can control it here. Sometimes leads to a more limited menu, but it's super fresh. Salads are amazing, eggs taste nothing like our eggs and are sooooo good!!
- They all put mayo on French fries...not ketchup.
- It's pretty cold for us....40's to low 50s most days..and super fogging in the mornings so far. Feels good tho...goes with the fall "look" everywhere. I haven't been cold yet.
- People are nice enough. Not super friendly, but not rude either. Everyone just goes about their business.
- Kids can drink at 16....and saw some younger kids, maybe 10, smoking. We were horrified and Mark was yelling at them from the car. Like he literally wanted to call the police. But it's legal here. U don't see the old people smoking...just young ones. So weird.
That's all my tidbits for now! Just some fun facts & my take on Germany (so far!!)
