Our first stop was Taldorf. From all the history and documentation that I could find, this was the main area that a lot of the Riedmans came from in Germany. Melchoir Riedman, my great-great grandfather, was born here in 1864, and lived here until he was 29 when he immigrated to America. They got the name Riedman from the area that they were from where there were a lot of reeds. The town of Taldorf was TINY. No stores, no shops, no restaurants. Just a lot of farms, a church, and a little school. I guess that was really all you needed back then though. The town was cute though. We went to the church and walked thru it. I checked the cemetery to see if any relatives were buried there, but they were all more recent gravestones. Most people were buried on their family farms & in their family cemeteries. I wish I could have found ours, but had no clue where to go or start. So we just walked around a bit, then drove around the town checking out all the homes.
Many Riedmans and our relatives were from this town but Melchoir was my most direct descendant that I could verify here. Most others were aunts, uncles, cousins, etc.... Truly magical being able to be here and get a taste of life for my German ancestors.
Next stop - Markdorf.
