....with the Sound of Music!!
We woke up this morning with no plans and no tours scheduled and no itinerary. So, we decided to drive over to Salzburg, Austria! We had been wanting to go when planning originally, but hadn't thought we could fit it in. There seemed to be so much to see there - including one of the largest castles in all of Europe AND the that is where the Sound of Music was filmed. Salzburg actually means "Salt Fortress" because the city was built to collect tolls from the salt barges travelling up & down the river in the early 1st century. In 1077, the castle was built and was the home of the city's Archbishop.
Anyways, we decided even though it was a rainy day today, a nice drive sounded good. Salzburg was about 2 hr drive from Munich thru the countryside, and we hadn't been to this southern part of the country yet.
When we got to Salzburg, we drove around a bit then parked down by the river. There was NO parking anywhere so we knew would have a walk just to get over to the Mirabelle Palace area that we were aiming for. It was pouring rain, which we didn't really mind since we were just kind of exploring anyways! There were a few people out & about - most with an intent of where they were going. It definitely wasn't crowded with tourists which was nice.
Salzburg is known for its fabulous music festivals, and gorgeous architecture. Usually there are artists out playing in the gardens and streets - but not today! Wish we could have seen that, as I imagine it would have been beautiful. We were having our own experience though. We walked around the city square a bit and stumbled upon a Hop On Hop Off bus that did the Sound of Music tour.
Well, with both of us being HUGE Sound of Music fans (Seriously!!), this was a no brainer. We had to do it! Unfortunately, since it was pouring, there was very little hopping off the bus. It was a great tour of the city though, and hit many of the amazing architectural sights, as well as the Sound of Music sights. I would love to come back one day in the summer or spring when all the flowers are blooming and we can do the REAL tour!

The buses were attached to and ran on these lines thru the street. It was ridiculous and seemed like chaos to us! |

Hohensalzburg Castle was built in 1077, is one of the largest castles in all of Europe and it sits on a hill overlooking the city of Salzburg. It was the original home of the Archbishop at the time. |

On the way back to Munich, we were starved and wanted some bad food. We literally sought out a McDonalds that was hidden in a little town about 2 miles off the main freeway. Of course, no one there spoke English, but who really needs English at McDonalds?! We were going to keep this little adventure a secret, but oh well - it was actually REALLY good! This was our view! |
