We had been planning our weekend of camping at Woods Canyon Lake for the past few weeks and have been SOOOOO looking forward to this little get-away. The weather reports were showing 80% chance of rain for the weekend, but we refused to be scared away. The temp was going to be perfect, and it was our only weekend to go....so pack it up and off we go!
Vince, Drake and I got up there first and tried to get a good camp spot. Unfortunately because of the time of year, they were mostly all reserved and taken already...but we got 2 spots next to each other and were pretty happy with it! Brent & Alisa were only about an hour behind us, so we just unloaded and relaxed for a few. It was gorgeous and amazing out today, so we really enjoyed just relaxing!
Once they got there, we unloaded everything, set up our tents and prepped the spot! We were ready for whatever was coming! What we didn't expect was the campsite next to us cutting down the biggest tree in the campground! Some guy came with chainsaws, and literally cut down a GIANT tree! It was so weird! Then it fell and they left, and the people moved right back into the campsite like nothing happened. It was strange! Glad the tree didn't fall on anyone though!
After all that excitement, Brent lit us a fire and we just hung out and started happy hour early! It was perfect!!! Kids were getting their outdoors on...and we were enjoying just doing nothing.
Clouds were starting to roll in so we decided we better eat soon. Vince and I made chili, hot dogs and grilled fries. We literally sat down to eat, and rushed the kiddos to eat fast....and as soon as we were done, the wind kicked up and it started raining. It was perfect timing!! We toughed it out for a few, but decided we better take cover and rushed to our tents. It was dark, but still pretty early in the evening. We were no where near tired yet either! So we hung out in our respective tents and waited for the storms to pass. Vince had stashed a box (?) of wine for us...so we were drinking on that while we waited. We heard Brent making a trip to the trailer to raid the cooler too. After a while, the storms let up and we made our way back to the fire. We lit it back up and hung out there for a while. It was about 8pm at this point, and the kids were just starting to get tired...although still running on adrenaline from the fun of camping in the rain. After the fire died out, we all went back to bed. Right when we did, the storms started up again. This time, we brought our bottle of scotch with us. Vince was speaking in an Irish accent and yelling back & forth with the kiddos over in their tent. It was hilarious!! They swore a leprechaun was in our tent ;)
It literally rained ALL NIGHT LONG. Luckily we had great tents, and we both brought our pop-up tarps to put over our tents for added protection. It worked perfect! So we faded off to sleep. A few hours later, I woke to some ruckus going on outside and Brent saying "Cassy is that you?". Vince and I weren't sure what was going on...thought maybe they were packing it up or something. We opened our window and looked out to see Brent walking around in the midst of a herd of extremely large elk that had invaded our campsite!!!! It was crazy!!!! He had gotten up because he heard the lid of cooler get thrown off. There was an elk standing there, staring at him, eating the leftover hot dogs! As he was ready to throw a rock at it to scare it away, he noticed that he was actually surrounded by them. One was eating Kaizen's bones & dog food...one in the cooler eating the hot dogs, and some just wandering around. So we were all shining our lights on them and trying to scare them away. It was literally craziness. After they realized there was no more food, they moved on, and off to sleep we went again. By this time it was about 5am, and the rain started again immediately. And by rain I mean the loudest thunder and crackling you could ever imagine! It sounded like we were IN the clouds!! It was pouring. The thunder was setting off our car alarm, which we could not turn off from our tent. So, there was all kinds of commotion going on all morning. We were "up", but it was raining too hard to actually get out of our tents. Once the rain let up, we got up!!! What a day & night!!
