So, Vince and I were tired of the heat, and had this brilliant idea that maybe we should go to Tucson for the weekend to "cool off". Ya Ya, we know it is still ridiculously hot there too...but thought maybe we could head up to Mt Lemmon, as they usually have MUCH cooler temps this time of year. Well, we found an amazing deal at the Ventana Canyon Resort, which we both always wanted to stay at, that is nestled up against the mountains with great views. Please note, this is a 5 star resort!
We got in Friday night & settled in to a gourmet happy hour. Vino y' Pringles. With such great views of the saguaro's on the mountain we thought it would be fun to sit on our patio and enjoy the evening. Well, we didn't anticipate the ridiculous amount of bugs that were about to invade us. Who knew that the desert in the middle of monsoon season was infested with all kinds of crazy bugs!? (I guess Vince did, he just didn't remember!) We aren't in Scottsdale anymore, Dorothy! Needless to say, our happy hour on the patio was very short lived. Off to dinner we went ....
Back from dinner...from our favorite little place called Mama Louisa's. This is our "go-to" place in Tucson every time we are there. It is a hole-in-the-wall that has been there forever, and Vince used to go to as a kid. He took me there on our first Tucson trip, and we have been back every time we have gone down there since.
We were having reverse happy-hour in the room!
The next day, we woke up and went and got some amazing breakfast at a cute little place that Jackie had introduced us to a while back. After breakfast, we headed out to the local mission. Being from CA, I am a BIG mission person! I love missions!! So being able to see the most significant mission in AZ, San Xaiver del Bac Mission, was very exciting for me. It is a gorgeous structure with a TON of history surrounding it. I loved reading all of the stories and learning the history behind the mission.
After an afternoon of exploring, we came back to the resort and ended up by the pool for the day. Very low-key and relaxing day!!
That night we ventured out to a new spot in the "nice" area of Tucson...which is fairly new. We went to a great little steakhouse called Sullivan's. We got there early to sit in the bar and have a drink and listen to some live music...which was actually very good! Wish we could have just stayed in there all night! We proceeded to our dinner, which was interesting! Who runs out of half your items on a Sat night!? Kinda silly. But it was a great dinner and we had a ton of fun just hanging out and people watching. Everything took twice as long as it should have, but we didn't mind. We were in no rush!
After dinner, we came back to the resort, which had a great band playing in the lounge area. So, we hung out there and watched the band....which again, was a ton of fun!
So, after our amazing dinner, and post-dinner entertainment, we went back to our room. I had gone to the bathroom and hear all kinds of ruckus going on out the door. I asked Vince what was going on & he said "oh nothing...its fine". OK. Well, the next morning he proceeded to tell me that a very large scorpion followed us into the room that night...and was scratching at the door to try to get out. So Vince opened the door and it ran out...like a dog. He was pretty freaked out, but didn't say anything cuz he didn't want to pack up and drive home that night. We didn't see anymore scorpions, but there were all kinds of bugs that had gotten into our room...things we don't see up in Scottsdale. yes, we are desert snobs....and I am ok with that!
Either way, it was a great little get-away weekend. Not a cooler one, but a nice one!
